There are many things that Darsie loves. She loves making coffee. She loves hiking. One thing that she has loved since she was a child is MUD! Her first ever full week at Camp Susque was in 2012 when she attended Survivor Week. This week was especially significant in her young life because it featured a mud crawl. Highlight of her week? Definitely. Highlight of her years at Susque? It’s near the top. Darsie has spent at least a week at Camp Susque every summer since, whether that be as a camper or staff member. She has worked her way through many roles at Susque, spending three summers as a counselor, one as the Jay Area Coordinator (her favorite position!), and two as the girl’s Summer Program Director. Her friends will tell you that her face lights up when she talks about her memories of Susque, and few have escaped the “Why you should work at Susque” pitch.

Darsie is a recent graduate of Messiah University and has a degree in Applied Health Science. Though she did not love all the studying required of her major, she did love gaining a deeper understanding of God’s creation, specifically how creative and detail-oriented He is. This is a love that was fostered in her from a young age by her mother, who homeschooled her through 9th grade. Darsie’s childhood was filled with many nature walks, tree identification lessons, art classes, and afternoons spent outdoors. She is very passionate about sharing this love for God’s creation with others and helping others experience their Creator through His creation at Camp Susque.

Besides working, mud, and being outdoors, Darsie enjoys getting coffee with friends, learning new recipes, and reading. She loves anything active and outdoors, whether that be hiking, playing sports, or running. Her personal aspirations are to run a half marathon, write a book, and visit Portugal. She loves the ministry of Camp Susque and is thrilled to be able to continue serving God here on the year-round team.

What year did you start at Camp Susque?

2020 as a summer staff member, 2026 on the year-round team.

What kind of experience do you have in your field?

I have a degree in Applied Health Science from Messiah University and took a number of courses in biology, chemistry, anatomy, and physics. I have also worked at Susque’s summer camps for several years which has given me valuable experience working with youth of all ages. I was homeschooled for most of my upbringing and had many courses that emphasized botany and appreciating God’s creation.

What kind of schooling do you have?

Bachelor’s degree in Applied Health Science from Messiah University.

Where were you born and raised?

I was born and raised just south of Philadelphia. Proud Delco native. Go Birds.

What is something most people don’t know about you?

I am horribly afraid of spiders, an unfortunate fear in this line of work.

What was your first job?

Working as a counselor at Camp Susque!

Describe your perfect day off?

My perfect day off would include a slow morning, taking the time to make the perfect cup of coffee and toast a bagel for avocado toast before sitting on a sunny porch to do my devotions. That afternoon I would go out with friends either on a hike or into town to go shopping. In the evening we would come back home, make dinner together (something including tomatoes and pasta), and watch a movie.

Where’s the coolest place you’ve ever been?

Arches National Park!

What’s one thing on your bucket list that you’d love to do?

Go on a hot air balloon ride!

What is your favorite Scripture?

All of Psalm 16, but specifically verse 11, which says “You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”

What is your favorite area at Camp Susque?

Up until recently I would have said the gazebo by the pond, but now it’s got to be the new pavilion at tipi town.

Describe your job at Camp Susque in a nutshell, and what is your favorite day in the life of your job?

In a nutshell, my job is to help people experience their Creator here at Camp Susque, whether that be through field trips, School of Discovery classes, Rain or Shine Club, or summer camp programs. Though I have quickly discovered that no day here looks exactly the same, my favorite days include learning about plants and wildlife that are local to Pennsylvania and sharing that knowledge with others. I particularly enjoy teaching about the creatures that live in our pond, especially our Red Spotted Newts!

What are you good at?

I am good at being a people person and listening to others. I am also good at being enthusiastic and getting others to be enthusiastic as well. Though I like my space a little cluttered, I am generally well organized and detail oriented.

What challenges you?

I am challenged by uncertainty and having to make decisions when the outcome is unknown. In other words, I am a bit of a control freak and am still learning to rely on God’s sovereignty. Other things that challenge me include sitting still, washing dishes, and reading through a recipe before starting to bake.

What is your favorite camp memory as a child?

As I already mentioned, the mud crawl is in my top memories of camp. Other favorite moments include playing muddy gaga, going to Rock Run as a Hawk, and scheming with my friends to get our counselor and the entire High Council creeked!

When did you become a Christian?

I was born and raised in a Christian home, so I can never remember a time when I did not believe that God was real and that Jesus died on the cross. However, that knowledge did not become personal to me until middle school when I understood the weight of my own sin and the peace that surpasses understanding that comes by being forgiven. I am a sinner saved by grace and I am still learning how to walk in a manner worthy of the great call of Christ.
