Colleen Zehr, Camp Susque’s School of Discovery Coordinator, started as Year Round Staff in 2020. Having taught 3rd-6th grades for 4 years and at a nature school for 2 years, Colleen is a great fit to the team.  Add to that her experience in the outdoor recreation field formerly working at Liberty Mountain, and having studied Inclusive Childhood Education with a concentration in Intercultural Studies/minor in TESOL from Houghton College, Colleen is perfectly suited to serve as Susque’s School of Discovery Coordinator. Her  joy for teaching owl pellet dissection and aquatic pond studies and her heart for Childhood Education makes her the perfect person to head up this Educational Programs coordinator role.

When Colleen isn’t coordinating SOD classes at Susque, you can find her in her garden digging in the dirt and watching her flowers and veggies grow from seed each Spring. You may even find her singing as a little known fact about her is that she loves to sing! Colleen and her husband, Isaac, are parents to one son, Leo, with another child on the way.

I taught 3rd-6th grade for 4 years and at a nature school for 2 years before working at Susque.

What is something most people don’t know about you?

I love to sing!

What was your first job?

Liberty Mountain

Describe your perfect day off?

I would wake up without an alarm (but not sleep in too late...don't want to waste my perfect day off!). I'd have time hanging out with friends, and dinner and games with family in the evening. Oh, and somewhere in there I'd have a couple hours to read, preferably in a hammock.

Where’s the coolest place you’ve ever been?

Tanzania

What’s one thing on your bucket list that you’d love to do?

I would love to go hiking/skiing/exploring in the Alps.

What is your favorite Scripture?

I honestly don't think I have one. Sometimes a passage will resonate with me for a particular season and become my "favorite" for a time. Lamentations 3:19-24 has been a big comfort to me the last few years.

The pond

Describe your job at Camp Susque in a nutshell, and what is your favorite day in the life of your job?

As the School of Discovery Coordinator, I plan the homeschooling classes and events and school field trips. This involves planning, booking, and coordinating all the details behind the events as well as teaching classes myself. It is a great mix of hands-on teaching and more of the behind-the-scenes planning work. One of my favorite kinds of days in my job is during a class or event I have spent many months planning. I finally get to see all the details come together, and enjoy seeing the kids and families have fun participating in the class.

What are you good at? 

Organizing things.

What challenges you?

Being on time- I am always about 5 minutes late, wherever I go.

What is your favorite camp memory as a child?

I don't really have one.

When did you become a Christian?

I became a Christian as a young child. I was raised in a Christian home by my mom, and she taught me the gospel and who God is. There have been many mountaintops and valleys in my Christian walk since then (of course!), but it all started for me as a young child of 5 or 6.
